The world of art knows no bounds. It is not limited by things concrete, abstract, solid nor physical. It is a world where the creative mind prevails and self-expression flows unhindered.
Through several art activities given to deaf students, LCD realized that a lot of deaf children possess great potential in the arts. More importantly, LCD saw a tool that deaf children can use for self-expression. And if pursued diligently, deaf children can achieve self-actualization through art. Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges
Not many people are aware of the capabilities of deaf people. They cannot see beyond the disability. Society fails to see that they too have dreams and ambitions in life. Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges is a project that aims to change these perceptions. Through a structured program, LCD hopes to give young deaf people the opportunity to train in visual and theatre arts. The program includes exposure to theater and visual artworks; undergo workshops in the performing and visual arts; and develop in the children their mentoring potentials.
LCD hopes to educate the community and challenge prevailing attitudes by showing how much deaf young people can achieve given the right opportunity and support.
This project is in partnership with Deaf Child Worldwide, a UK-based organisation dedicated to enabling deaf children to overcome poverty and isolation. It is the international development agency of the National Deaf Children’s Society in the UK.
